Hurricane Safety with Pets

What Coral Gables Residents Need To Know

All too often, furry family members are overlooked when it comes to hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. As a pet owner, it's important that you have an animal care plan for storms, including travel plans and knowing what you need to bring with you. At Coral Gables Animal Hospital, our veterinarians want to make sure that you and your pets are ready for hurricane season.

Hurricane Safety with Pets: What Coral Gables Residents Need To Know

Have a Plan

Evacuate early when you know a storm is headed your way. Be sure to bring at least a week's worth of food, water, and any medications that your pets might need. You'll also want to bring a sturdy carrier, a litter box for a cat or waste cleanup bags for a dog, and favorite toys.

Finding Shelter

Public shelters typically do not allow pets, so it's important that you have a plan in place for where you'll stay. Check with hotels in safe zones to find out which ones allow pets. Leaving pets at home is not recommended and should be an absolute last resort.

Vaccine Records

Be sure to have proof of your pets’ shot records before you evacuate. Some hotels will require you to show proof of current vaccination records before they will accept your pets. If your pets are not currently up-to-date on their vaccines, make an appointment right away.

Traveling with Pets

Traveling with pets can feel hectic, especially if you're evacuated without a lot of warning. Many Airlines require health certificates to fly, Coral Gables Animal Hospital can help with these special forms so remember to make an appointment with us as soon as you know you are traveling. It's a good idea to have an emergency kit prepared for storm season. You'll want to make sure that your pets’ identification tags and microchipping information are updated. It's important to also have pictures of your pets in case you're separated. Hard copy photos work best as it may be hard to charge your phone if your area loses power.
