Storm Preparedness for Pets

Pets are important members of the family and should be included in the family emergency plan. Working with our veterinarian in Coral Gables, FL can make sure your pet will be safe in an emergency.

Step 1: Make a Plan

Having a plan in place for you and your pets in case of an emergency will make you worry less about what to do should an emergency happen. As part of your evacuation plan, know where there is a safe place you can take your pets. Hotels and shelters don’t typically allow pets. Share your evacuation plan with neighbors, friends, or relatives so someone is there for your pets if you aren’t able to bring them along with you. Getting your pets microchipped is also important for pet safety. Contact our local animal hospital if you aren’t sure about how to care for your pet during an emergency.

Build a Kit for Your Pets

Just as you have a disaster kit for the human members of your family, do so for your pet as well. Having two kits is helpful. Have a larger one if you need to shelter in place and a smaller one for evacuating. As part of food prepping, keep several days’ worth of food in a waterproof, airtight container. For medication prepping, keep extra supplies of any medicine your pet needs on a regular basis and store it in a waterproof container. Once you have taken care of food prepping and medication prepping, include first aid supplies, collars and leashes, grooming items, and items needed for sanitation, such as plastic trash bags, a litter box, newspapers, and pet litter. Having familiar items for your pet can also help reduce stress.

Other Tips

Evacuate large animals earlier when possible and map out different routes in advance. Be sure you have the available vehicles that are needed for transporting each animal and make sure there is food and water at the destination.
